The GUIness of it all

Ok, so I finally got X compiled (stupid ldconfig) but now I have another problem. I'm trying to install xFCE for a desktop manager, so I'm also trying to compile the GTK (dependency). I've installed all of the _GTK's_ dependencies, but every time I try to run ./configure, it crashes with the message

configure: error: Pango 1.2.0 and Xft backend is required for x11 target

I know that Pango is installed (I can see it in /usr/local/lib, and I HAVE run ldconfig this time!!!) so the problem must be Xft. What I've read says something about needing Xft2, but that may not even make any real sense. Do I need to recompile XFree86 with some sort of option (to enable Xft) or what?

Thanks.
