   Much of that info is available through DDC.  For the most
part, monitor EDID information is acquired through DDC via
the chip's I2C port.  In general, I2C access is proprietary to
the video chip, but there may be some VESA services exporting
that.  Whether there are utilities that do that outside of
XFree86, I don't know.  You might look at some of the X configuration
utilities that come with some of the Linux distributions.
