virtual resolution

Dear XFree86-Experts,

I just installed Version 4.4.0 on  a Dell Inspiron 8000 and
nearly everything works fine. I can even switch between the
resolutions
    Modes      "1400x1050" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

This was the reason for the update from Version 4.2. because
I need to work with a projector with max. res. 1024x768.

Now, I would like to get rid of the virtual resolution 1400x1050
when I am working with 1024x768.
Is there a way to switch the virtual resolution on the fly or
do I need to start a second Xserver.
