David, i have this problem with my logitech mouse in windows. For windows i have to install correct drivers... (i must change the normal PS/2 drivers with the logitech ones) maybe its the same with your mouse. While building another linux from scratch last week with the 2.6.2 kernel i saw alot of mouse support in it you should try compiling a new kernel.
