If I understand your question correctly you want to ba able to boot into text 
mode, without starting KDE.

You can try the following. Note that this is based on Mandrake but it should 
be similar in red hat.

Press Control-Alt-F1. This will take you to a text mode session. Log in and 
then type su and enter the root password.

cd /etc

now open the file inittab with a text editor like vim.

find the line: id:5:initdefault: It will probably be the first line after the 
initial comments. Thes comments will also tell you the runlevels used by your 
distro. Usually 5 is "X11" and 3 is "full multiuser mode" or similar.

Change the line to:  id:3:initdefault:

Save and exit. Type reboot and enter. The system should then reboot into text 
mode where to start KDE you need to enter the command startx or startkde.

When you have resolved your problem change inittab back to default to level 5.
