The first rule of Unix networking is "*any* weird delay problem is probably reverse DNS", moreso because if you have the interface down, it goes away -- reverse lookups will fail completely, quickly, if they can't *reach* the server Check your /etc/hosts file on the sparc, too, and see if it has an IPv6ish localhost entry.
