My pc is also Inspiron 500m, and I encounter the same question as you, this is what I did:
1. download xfree86 4.4.0 from http://www.xfree86.org
2. copy and backup three directories: /usr/X11, /etc/X11, /etc/fonts
3. notice: leave these three directories there.
4. sh Xinstall.sh, and don't overwrite the config file.

Good Luck!

主题: x windows config on dell inspiron 500m

Good Day Ladies & Gentlemen,

Ive got a problem with configuring my xwindows (using RH9) on my dell notebook. Its an Inspiron 500m. The problem that I'm facing is that it wont budge from its 800x600 resolution. On windows, it can go up to 1400x1280. On
RH9 I cant even go to '1028x768'.

Ive tried configuring the monitor using dell generic laptop display '1400x1280' and '1280x768'. Every time i change the resolution higher than '800x600' it woudl crash the xwindows and I configure it again. Ive even tried with 'generic laptop display'.

Other than that, Ive also tried using 'vesa' driver for the display. I think the inspiron 500m is using an Intel 812i display. Ive also tried disbling the VGA something mode in BIOS. I could start the x windows using '1280x768'. but the display is only fixed in the middle of the monitor. In other words its not streached across the screen.

I would appreciate any help to solve this problem as im almost giving up with this notebook. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.
