This seems to be exactly my problem. A few minutes tinkering with the config file and using your email as a guide helped out tremendously. Now for some reason I have to 'startx' at login and have lost my usual gnome login screen.

Looks like you deleted part of your Screen section (the Display subsection to
be precise).
