I'm on thin ice here, as I have no experience with your setup, but my guess is that since you didn't set up the TV, nor told X that it should use different settings for the two display outputs, it autodetects (through DDC) the ranges, and takes the lowest one (the one for your TV). Disconnect the TV to see if your problems disappear. If so: properly set up the two displays, or else you may be damaging your TV when you have it display an out of range signal.
