File permissions?

Hi there. I'm a new Linux user (The past two days) and I have encountered a very bad problem.

My XF86Config-4 file has a monitor definition missing, which makes X crash and not run at
bootup.

I've been trying to access the file in Emacs but when I try to type it says the file is read
only.

I tried to change the file's permissions using Chmod, but when I typed:

chmod 777 XF86Config-4

it said 'permission denied'

Any ideas how I can edit this file to put in the missing monitor definition?
