I had no luck with the 855patch program, as it works only for the 855 chipset. At least it didn't work for my 865. What worked for me was the following: downgrade the BIOS from version A03 to A02. There is a option in the BIOS (press F2 at startup to access the BIOS settings), which specifies how much memory to reserve for graphics. This defaults to 1MB (=640x480@16 or 1024x768@8), but can be set to 8MB. With this 8MB setting I have 1600x1200@24 running on my computer without problems. The A03 version of the BIOS also lets you set 8MB, but it obviously has a bug and always reports 1MB to the X graphics driver, even if you specify 8MB in the BIOS. You can download the older BIOS verison from the Dell web-pages. To install it, you need to boot into DOS (an old DOS floppy will do) and start the downloaded exe-file, which will install the new BIOS.
