Resolution problem

Hi,

I am using a compaque presario machine p4, intel MB,
256MB RAM.

I dual boot b/w win and rh linux 9.0.

windows gives maximum resolution (1024 x 768) at 24
bits, once the disaplay driver is provided.

but, Redhat doesnt seem to give the needed resolution,
only (800x600 max), that too with shivering and all.
why does this happen? does windows have any special
tricks to take up more memory? 'coz the bios shared
memory is only 2 MB. if so , why doesn't xfree86 have
that trick?

in compaq machine, i cannot change the bios shared
memory beyond the current one.

pls help..

rtnair.
