make sure you have xfs started.  Or equally as good, don't bother with xfs
and comment out the "Fontpath unix/:7100" line in you XF86Config file.
For this to work, you'll need other paths in the FontPath specified.

On a side note - this seems to be an incredibly common situation. "My
computer crashed/rebooted and now X doesn't work".  Anyone else have a
clue why?  why would xfs all of a sudden stop running?  was there some
distro update that didn't update the config files or something?
