A 1st invocation of the X server has crashed and as left the lock file and/or the Unix domain socket behind him. Remove those files : rm /tmp/.X0-lock rm /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 and try again to start your server. Then, look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log which will contain the real error messages. If they are not explicit enough, then come back here (or use the misc@xxxxxxxxxxx list) with this error.
