X won't start on Slackware 9.1

hi,
 
i have installed Slackware 9.1 ,kernel version 2.4.22.
 
i can't start X coz it is complaining about the mouse problem alongwith gpm.
 
when i get the login prompt, the few lines before the login prompt are:

Updating Xfonts indexes: /usr/X11R6/bin/fc-cache
Starting gpm: /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/mouse -t imps2
gpm: oops() invoked from gpm.c(977)
/dev/mouse:no such device

and when i do a 'startx' , it looks like i'm going to have graphical login screen (as i used to get on my Redhat 9 on the same machine), but then i get the following messages:

No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full server output, not just the last messages.

please help me out what is going on what is the problem.
