flicker free refresh at 1600x1200?

I cannot seem to get flicker free refresh on my system running
Fedora Core 1 and Xfree86 4.3.0. (this did work with an
older Debian install that used (?) 3.3

        Hardware is a #9 Motion 771 (S3 968) video card and Hitachi
CM-2112M 21" monitor (both identified correctly when X is
        configured.)

I believe the problem is that X identifies this as a 170 MHz
RAMDAC. The corresponding section from the log is:

(II) Loading sub module "ramdac"
(II) LoadModule: "ramdac"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libramdac.a
(II) Module ramdac: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
        compiled for 4.3.0, module version = 0.1.0
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.6
(--) s3(0): Attached RAMDAC is IBM 524
(--) s3(0): MCLK 60.000 MHz
(--) s3(0): RefClock: 16000
(--) s3(0): Max pixel clock at this depth is 170 Mhz
(II) s3(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.00-107.00 kHz
(II) s3(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-160.00 Hz
(II) s3(0): Clock range: 16.00 to 170.00 MHz

I have added the 'DacSpeed' option to the "Device" section in
        XF86Config:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "s3"
        VendorName "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName "S3 968 (generic)"
        DacSpeed 220
EndSection

This seems to be ignored. I can find no evidence in the log that
        X recognizes this option.

I have tried adding the Modeline from my old XF86Config but that
just causes X to ignore that resolution and use the next
        available resolution.

        I produced a modeline at
        http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl:

Modeline "1600x1200@68" 211.65 1600 1632 2432 2464 1200 1224 1237 1261

and the result when I restart X (from the log) is:

(--) s3(0): RefClock: 16000
(--) s3(0): Max pixel clock at this depth is 170 Mhz
(II) s3(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.00-107.00 kHz
(II) s3(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-160.00 Hz
(II) s3(0): Clock range: 16.00 to 170.00 MHz
(II) s3(0): Not using mode "1600x1200@68" (bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan)

Any help getting X to drive this monitor at better than 60 Hz
        would be most welcome.

        thanks,
        hank
