I was having troubles with my S3 Savage IX based laptop freezing with X 4.3.0. On a whim I set the driver to vesa, since the screen is 800x600 and there's no 3d stuff to speak of. Works great. Give it a try if you haven't. Wish I knew what was up with the savage driver. It doesn't just hose X, it locks the machine hard. -- Be very careful about the beginning.
