i could be wrong on the details (so I won't go into them) but...
X windows is what linux systems and unix systems use to give the user a GUI,
such as windows, buttons, etc... There are probably alternatives to using the
whole X package o' stuff, but I don't know of any by name.
The X window system is a general approach to windowing (making GUI's) on
unix/linux systems. XFree86 is a free, open-source version of X11, the 11th
implementation of X. someone correct me if I'm wrong (or better yet, tell me if
I'm right ;) ).
