Yep, you were right -- crashes only on those funky 3D screen-savers, I assume they use OpenGL. :)

Is that a known limitation of this card, or should I just try to compile the latest DRI CVS for my card?

I'm on RH9. This happend using both the 4.3.0 that comes with RH and the CVS version I compiled (4.3.99.14), with or without dual-head on a Hercules 3D Prophet 7000 (Radeon 7000).
