The font server is called xfs.

Since you didn't say what OS you are using, I shall chauvinisticly assume you 
are using RedHat.

As root, run

chkconfig --levels 345 xfs on

and then

service xfs start

The first will make sure it comes on every time, and the second will start it 
right now.

If you are using a different OS, your typeage may vary. Find xfs and run it.
