I've never used windows XP, but I've got a windows 98 system on a partion, with cygwin and x.
If I remember correctly, (assuming you installed the X server), and a window manager such as WindowMaker or twm, etc., I think I just stated X from the prompt like:
$ X & (starts X in background) $ DISPLAY=:0.0 $ export DISPLAY $ wmaker & (starts WindowMaker window manager in background)
You could subsitiute twm for wmaker, but there's no comparison!
Those directories with the % in them, hold the "packages" you installed.

Hello, I downloaded cygwin for windows and i installed it... when i click on cygwin from my desktop and it comes up with a dos prompt that has my computername like Frankie Nguyen@____ and now appear next like $ <<< I type 1) $sh /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.sh doesnt work for this 2) $cd/user/X11R6/bin same above 3) $/usr/X11R6/bin/xhost remote.amrl.uakron.edu <<<<my school server doesnt work either 4) $ssh -X -l frankie remote.amrl.uakron.edu it doesnt work either it should ask me the passwrd for it... do you have any idea to help me? I am using windows XP PRO. cygwin/ DOES THIS ONE WORKS FOR WINDOWS XP? FRANKIE
PS : on my desktop it has a folder with this junk name: ftp%3a%2f%2fcygwin.mirrors.pair.com
and in that folder had alot stuffs in there i dont know what to do
