Hello, I may have a idea on how you could possibly fix your problem; for I had pretty much the same exact problem, or at least I remember that error file all too well. The problem right now that I have been seeing, is that Xfree86 doesn't support's ati's hardware acceleration, too well, hence gives you that problem. Way I fixed mine, was in sence, to damage the old configuration file for Xfree86, and have it rebuild it again, but without hardware acceleration support. Now I am going to assume you can get root abilities. I know how to use the grub bootloader halfway good right now, if you are using lilo, may want to check around on the web or someone else may know how to do it on that bootloader. First you will need to boot into single mode, way I do it, when you go into the bootloader, hit e, and go down one line (will start with "kernal"), hit e again. Then you need to type " single" (do include that space before the word single), hit enter, then b. Once your machine boots to the terminal (or at least I call it the terminal), type "cd etc", then type "vi inittab", then press down till you get to "id:5:initdefault:", hit the i key, then change that line to "id:3:initdefault:" (the 5 should be change to a 3 right now), then hit the esc key. To save the modification, type ":w" , then ":q". To do modify the current xfree86 configuration. Once you are back at the terminal, type "cd X11". In that directory, you need to type "vi XF86Config". You need to then scroll down to, where it defines your screen depth and resolution. The easiest way is to go down till you see a line like "Depth 16" or similar, that is your color depth for your screen, change that to a invalid color depth, like "15", or '23". Do the same thing to change it, on the line hit the i key to be able to modify, once done hit the esc key. Then save and quit, the ":w" and then the ":q". Once you are done with that, you need to reboot, easy way to do that, in the terminal, type "reboot". Let your machine boot like normal, when it gets to thew login screen, login as root. Once you are logged in as root , and at the terminal again, type "redhat-config-xfree86" It will complain about the configuration, just ignore that, and it will try detecting your video card again, and also alow you to change the screen resolution and depth. Also in that screen, you need to make sure the use hardware acceleration is unchecked. Finish up through the configuration. That will hopefuly fix your problem. The only thing you need to do, is make your system boot into the gui, to do this; after the configuration is done and you are back at the terminal. Type "cd ..", then "cd etc", then "vi inittab"; scroll back down to where you previously changed that id:5:initdefault to id:3:initdefault, you need to change that 3 back to a 5. Save and quit, then you need to just reboot, by typing "reboot". Hope it works for you, keep in mind that linux IS case sensitive. I made sure I typed the correct caseing for you.
