1998 vintage pc with win98, dual boot to
Linux.
X would not work on this pc because: 1) 64m shared
ram (cpu and video), 2) mandrake min rqmts were 64m ram plus 2m ram on video
card. Original video is onboard SiS597/598. (Actually it's the
desktop application (gnome, kde, etc), it works, it is just so s-l-o-w that I
would wait for hours for a screen click to respond.)
Bought a video card, Nvidea Gforce4, pci, 64m
ram.
No way that I can find to "disable" the onboard
SiS. (Its not an option in "press F2" during bootup.)
Plugged in the new card anyway, ran micro$oft
windows98, and nvidea Gforce works fine. (win98 device manager shows
SiS disabled).
Downloaded, and ran, XFree86 4.3 Xinstall.sh
-check. (also had extract in same subdirectory).
First error message "...file: command not
found", then "...string: command not found", then
"object format is a.out"
"a.out no longer supported"
Is a.out a Mandrake 8.1 problem?
If Mandrake problem - how do I
fix?
Is a.out a SiS problem?
If not Mandrake, but is SiS, I
want to disable SiS anyway, how do I get past this roadblock?
I also downloaded the nvidea driver. Should I
skip XFree86 process and jump to nvidea?
Thanks,
robere
