I have the same problem with the S3 ViRGE DX/GX video adapter (from an old
Compaq PII).

Subject: Xtest ok, X bad

I have installed an IBM server xseries 330 ( video is SavageS3 )
with XFree86 Version 4.0.3 .

I can see an test the Xserver configuration by using "Xtest"; but when I
launch "X" , I get a grey screen , with the mouse moving , but that is all
.
The "log" file stops just after the loading of the mouse .

I have tried already :
- install XFree86 Version 4.1.18
- install the latest Savage driver 1.1.26t
- add the "accel" option

Any I idea ?
Would the problem be just after the loading the graphics ?
