Surely you can use the 4.2.x series. I have a Radeon 7000 PCI 64mb DDR card,
and sure it doesnt have the dual head or whatever extra goodies, but it works
fine, with custom module because it's PCI.

If I'm not mistaken, Xconfigurator writes a 3 series config file, and xf86cfg
or xf86config writes the 4 series for RedHat. XFdrake for Mandrake will write
either or, you get the option to specify, although it defaults to 4 now.
Debian does it way different, remail me if your using that and I'll try to
walk you through it. But the best thing about XFree86 is that under just
about any distro you can use XFree86 -configure followed by XFree86
- -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new to test the config, and just tweak the minor
details by hand:)
