a few infos would be usefull, graphic card, X version (X 3.3.6 or X 4.0.3), if your system is attempting to run X 3.3.6 then post /etc/X11/XF86Config otherwise post /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and post your log (usually /var/log/XFree86.0.log) finding out version either do X -version or look on top of the log. The best way to proceed is to first try to start with level 3 and use startx this allows you to see better what is happening. If things are messed up run xconfigurator (possibly Xconfigurator) do not let the config program test your conf.
