I had the same problem. I just had to change in /etc/inittab the line

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon

I believe that a prefdm process is searched for respawning, but not found 
as it's a script.
