kdm uses /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession which probably got overwritten when you
updated XFree86.  In your Xsession file, make sure you have a kde option
defined.  Something like:

case $# in
1)
        case $1 in
        failsafe)
                exec xterm -geometry 80x24-0-0
                ;;
        kde)
                exec startkde
                ;;
        gnome)
                exec gnome-session
                ;;
        esac
esac
