Unauthorized user Error

Hi!

As any normal user, when "startx" is launched, it says " user not authorized to
run the X server." When I'm "root" either by login or via "su", the X Window
is up and running( the mouse is also working)! I used the xf86config-v3
program as root to manually set X in a Debian 3.0 Linux system; under Debian
2.2, I've used xf86config dozens of times and encountered no problems with
normal users. I chose not to use xdm. Will you please enlighten me on which
things I may have overlooked?? Thanks very much!
