with XFree86 4.x I think vesa is not a server but driver. the file is called vesa*.o (* means something I dont remember... maybe nothing) I think you have to change the device config in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 devic "vesa" I am not at the machine right now so I cant verify this but something like this.
