I had better luck using

#xf86config

It takes you through setup for your devices, asks you alot of questions, and 
then writes an XF86Config to /etc/X11.  Then, if you still have problems, you 
can go in and tweak that file (or better, make a copy of it, then edit it, then 
replace).
