excellent question! i assumed(yeah, my failing) that the unresolved
symbols
caused the driver to fail to load. if you get that msg and still get a
desktop,
then i am chasing a red herring! i will look for a module of that name.

i also need to find the linux tool that lists symbols, my background
is a more traditional unix, but a static kernel. these dynamic issues
are a new twist.  additionally, i have worked more sith storage and 
nics rather than vga cards, but thats now changing.

i wonder if you'd mind emailing me your /var/logs/Xfree startup log?

also, what does the long listing of your 

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o look like? that is the
video card you have right?
