hi xf folks,

typical newbie question, i have downloade, built, and now
installed xf 4.2.0. as it built so clean, i figured i'd
go for broke and install it.

alas, i get a problem, no gui after a reboot. looking at the
startup logs, i see unresolved externals,

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Rage 128 Pro PF rev 0, Mem @ 0xd4000000/26,
0xd9000000/14,
 I/O @ 0xc000/8

as the rage pro driver.o was timestamped at the same time as my update,
clearly it was overwritten.

so, to avoid making a bad thing worse, can anyone provide me a pointer
on where to go from here?

thanks in advance, jackc...
