Most versions of Linux (and I presume BSD etc.) come with extensive 
documentation. There is internal documentation in the supplied 
XF86Config file also.
Basically I let the system generate an XF86Config file (there are several
methods) and then tweak it. As I recall you run something like
 XFree86 -configure
or the program (all lower case) xf86config.

It would help us to help you if you stated what OS, what release and what
video hardware, particularly the video card.
