[Newbie]Help with ATI Rage mobility, external monitor on Vaio C1VE

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

I've spent the last few weeks trying to get an external monitor (AOC Spectrum 9Glr)
working with Redhat 7.2 (2.4.7-10 plus X 4.1) on a Sony Vaio C1VE Picturebook
which has built-in Rage Mobility graphics. I've set up an XF86Config-4 as attached
which I can run using startx -- -layout LCD or CRT. The LCD bit works fine at 1024 x
480 (thanks to a modeline from Dave Barr's website) and the AOC mimics the
picture with an aspect ratio which is wrong as expected. But the 1024x768 (and any
other) CRT-only variant produces "I can't sync" clickings from the monitor. KDE is
starting ok, as I can hear the music! I've tried about twenty modelines, some
invented, some from on-line calculators, and currenlty one from the information in
the monitor's DDC return that I found in the Xfree.0.log. (attached) - surley that
should work?

The Linux installation should be clean as I have re-installed many times to ensure a
stable base (I am not a linux expert and I'm working as root so assume that I may
break something). I did an on-line Redhat update to 2.4.9 but no change, and I've
reverted to 2.4.7 at rebuild no umpteen.

During my first build attempt, I ran Lennart Poettering's "atitvout" utility which is
meant to enable the VGA output and I get the impression that it did enable the VGA
output from the PC for ever (my notes are not too good from that early era) as I
don't recall ever seeing a picture on the AOC before that. The console output is
displayed fine from bootup onwards (provided the AOC is connected at that time),
along with the stretched KDE output mentioned above.

[BTW I saw somewhere that the vesa driver worked 'better' than the ati driver.
Putting "vesa" in place of "ati" in the Device section produces a picture on the AOC
ok but the system locks solid (as in power off is the only escape though Linux
seems to be running) at the "initializing peripherals" bits of the KDE startup.]

I have another PC (AMD K6/2-500 with S3 Virge graphics) which runs Redhat
7.2/X4.1 fine with the AOC at 1024x768. I went to look at the X log to see what the
DDC output was - and there is *NO* log that I could find anywhere on the disk!!

Windows ME as shipped with the Vaio could drive LCD and CRT simultaneously or
individually ..... There is no Bios setup worth talking about on the Vaio.

I'm now at a complete loss, so any help you expert folk can give would be much
appreciated.

Regards

Chris Bryant
