Hello again, I went to the S3 homepage and downloaded s3id.exe ======================================== A:\>s3id S3 Chip Identify Utility Version 1.00.07 Related CR register information: CR2D = 0x8A CR2E = 0x13 CR2F = 0x02 CR30 = 0xE1 CR36 = 0x1F CR5E = 0x00 CR68 = 0xFF CR6F = 0xF8 CR72 = 0x00 CR73 = 0x00 CR92 = 0x00 CRB0 = 0x00 S3 Video Chip: Trio3D/2X (362/368) Display Memory Size: 8M Display Memory Type: SDRAM =========================================== I think this identifies the chip unambiguously. Hence linux, FreeBSD or Solaris for Intel CPU using XFree86 3.3.6 and 4.2.0 supports my video board with XF86_SVGA server with the s3v driver (3.3.6) and "s3virge" driver. (4.2.0) I'd now like to know what is a server and what is a driver ? why don't 4.2.0 need any server, just a driver ? If it needs a server which one am I to select ? What is the recommended XFree86 version for my video card, please ? Yours Sincerely Morten Gulbrandsen
