I just installed Mandrake 8.2. The distribution includes XFree86 4.2.0 but not XFree86 3.3.6. The video card in my PC has an S3 968 chip. The XFree86 site says this chip is supported in 3.3.6 but not in 4.2.0. Mandrake loads an S3 driver for this card that it identifies as being from 3.3.6. Is it OK to use 3.3.6 drivers with XFree86 4.2.0? Most Xwindow stuff seems to work, but some will not. For example I can get KDE or IceWM to run, but Gnome says that I have an incompatible Xwindows system. What is going on here? Vic Roberts
