It usually means that in your screen section one of these problems occurs: 1. the device does not exist (is not recognised) then the problem is in the device section, usually no appropriate driver has been found. 2. the monitor does not exist (is not recognised) 3. there is no display subsection corresponding to your default depth (with usable modes line) you can get more info from /var/log/XFree86.0.log Posting your XF86Config (resp. XF86Config-4), your log and infos about your hardware (graphic card, monitor etc.) might help us help you...
