Don't mean to get your hopes up, just lending a sympathetic ear...I had a very similar problem with the XFree86-4.2.0 port under FreeBSD. I asked about it, but never got a very good answer--lots of folks said "why build it from source? get the binaries," and so on and so forth...so I got the binaries, and they have been my friend thus far.
