A few weeks ago I had the same problem with debian 3.0 and Xfree 4.1. The mouse jumped aruond like a mad dog and was uncontrollable. This seems to be a problem of gpm. I killed gpm and all was fine. I added the line killall gpm to my X start scripts, so ervery time, X is starting, gpm is going to be killed. It's just a workaround, but it works on my machine. Try it.
