I know. When I typed startx again, X started up. I examined error.log after that (in KDE's konsole), after I was finished seeing what would happen to X when switching consoles. Starting a second X session never came into the picture. (Notice that the second time I started X, I did NOT redirect stdout and stderr to the file error.log.
