[Newbie]config debugging tips?

I'm getting no errors but my screen does not look right at all. Depending on
configuration tweaks and different modes I get either:
- a graphic screen with non-moving but incoherent colored lines and blocks
- a graphic screen with moving colored snow
- the power save mode
- no signal

What does each mean (what's wrong which makes it do that)?
What can I try to resolve each?

I have XFree86 4.2.0 installed from the Linux binaries on top of Red Hat 7.2
with the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX400 and a Gateway Flat Panel which is connected
via DVI. Are there any gotchas I need to know about any of these?

Thanks,
Helen
