I don't know exactly how to do it but LDAP connection is available as a setting on active directory. I'm not sure how one turns it on or off, but it is possible. It was discussed on this list some time ago. I can send you an example of the script I used to connect if needed.

LDAP Client is needed to be installed and compiled together with PHP so it would work.
 
Do I Have to install an LDAP Server also? Where do I find that? *can't figure it out really*
