I have got around this by downgrading Kindle to 1.5
It was 1.7 I had been using and 1.8 was the version which would not even install.
I would still like to know if the fixme could be actioned.

I would also like to say that I used WINE very successfully ten years ago in a commercial environment to run Excel to build complex spreadsheets overnight from Pick D3 data exported to csv on the same box. I found that Excel actually worked, running macros, over ten times faster in WINE than in Windows, simply because it could not wait for screen-completion with no feedback from Xwindows!
Even then, though, I could not use the latest Excel versions due to deliberate Ms anti-wine measures.
