Thanks... Winetricks quartz really did solve it! Guess I did miss something after all (though how am I supposed to know I need quartz? Didn't find a single mention of it in the AppDB)... And now I'm facing the challenge of getting past the intro... Bug is not new... Searching claims it's a locale slash font related issue... Switching OS locale to japanese doesn't help though.
