OK thinking. I ptu in the default default.pa back, then I booted, ran the
padevchooser (or the manager w/e it's called). I see this under
sink/source/devices/modules:

module-alsa-card device_id="0" name="pci-0000_00_1b.0"
card_name="alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0" tsched=yes
ignore_db=no_card_properties="module-udev-detect.discovered=1"

Default Source:  alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo
Default Sink: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo

Could I somehow use this information to get mic/better alsa output support?
