You state that you are using an Intel HD 3000 grapics processor, correct?Intel is notoriously bad for producing high quality Linux video drivers. At the present time, nVidia leads the graphics battle for Linux use. AMD/ATI is a very far distant second and Intel is not even there.
Best thing to do: Get an current nVidia Graphics card and disable, if possible, the on-board Intel graphics unit.
