Right, I have tracked this down and fixed it. Winetricks inserts a bunch of DLL overrides, that were getting forgotten after a reboot. I think that this might have been down to a corrupt user.reg file. Don't know how that came to be, maybe winetricks, but not sure. Now that the overrides are fixed in place, all is well.
