I'm sure it was a "thinko" on your part (like a typo, but it happens in your brain).
This whole kernel thing comes back to smartphones. Ever since phones had kernels, they were on their way to being near-personal computers. With some people, their smartphone has actually become their main computing device.

To put it simply, the kernel is the program that all your other programs are ran by (plus the lower half of dealing with the processor, other hardware, and as well as other technical details). The kernel is like a gatekeeper to the processor. In order for a program's code to be passed onto the processor, the kernel has to allow it.
