Unable to use certain keys after setting focus to desktop

I am having a weird problem.  When playing World of Warcraft and now Rift, I have a keyboard shortcut to set focus to desktop.  When I return to the game from the desktop, I am unable to use the alpha keys on my keyboard.  I am able to use all other keys, but the "qwerty" are not responsive.  At first I thought this was limited to WoW, but I encountered the same problem this weekend with Rift.

Running wine 1.3.17, Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit.  This was previously working for over a year.   I do not recall any upgrades or the like that broke this.
